Subaru Outback (5th gen) smartphone mount
Description
I was driving around in a rental Malibu, and noticed that it had these two slots in the center console that were obviously made so a phone could slide right into them vertically. Dumbfounded. What a neat feature! I had to have one... Should fit all 5th Gen Subaru Outbacks that have a center console that looks like mine. The general idea is that you can plug your phone in, and then drop it into the cradle. iPhone 6 plus users should be able to reach their home buttons easily. Be sure to use a rubber band as shown in the pictures. It seems to do best with a tall elastic as shown, but I'm sure if you double or triple up thinner ones it'll be fine. The plug uses the rubber band both to seal against the opening and to apply pressure to the plastic clip. The plug has a distinct wedge at the base of the plug that grips the seam between the top of the console, and the pocket plastic underneath. Mine has a nice "click" when it slides home. The cradle is 88mm (X) wide by 17mm (Y) thick by 20mm (Z) deep. My LG V20 in a Speck case is approximately 11mm thick and drops right in with probably too much room to spare in the Y and doesn't touch the center stack or console. But that also means my wife's iPhone 6plus in a wallet case fits just fine too. With summer heat cycles, I may need to add another clip to the rear of the dock like in the front, but so far it's doing great! Update Sept 4, 2017: Added a smaller one. The opening on this one is 75mm x 14mm and should accommodate non-phablet style phones. I don't have one to test with, but should work. Update Sept 19, 2017: Added a 77mm x 14mm variant. Also added step and igs files for the phablet mount. Update May 28, 2018: It finally happened, my mount printed in PLA deformed on a hot day. Low to mid 90's on a bright sunny day and the car was parked in the sun. The rubber band mangled the print pretty good. Going to print it in PETG and see what's happens. Update July 4, 2018: Made a new version. It now pivots. You shouldn't need any hardware when puting it together. Just in case though, I added holes for 4x M3x10mm screws and washers to provide more mechanical advantage.
